The B48 turbocharged engine can achieve manufacturer-reported gains of up to 40 horsepower at the wheels, approximately 55 horsepower at the crank, depending on the vehicle, fuel, operating conditions, and configuration.

Additional supporting modifications and suitable higher-octane fuels can provide further tuning potential where supported.

• Gen1 CARB Approved: Designated emissions-compliant configuration for specifically approved vehicle applications.

How Does the JB4 Work?

The JB4 is an electronic piggyback tuning system that connects to supported factory sensors and the vehicle's engine-management system. It processes available engine data and adjusts supported tuning parameters to deliver increased performance.

Unlike an ECU flash tune, the JB4 does not overwrite your vehicle's original ECU calibration. It can be removed when required, although installation and warranty considerations should still be reviewed.

Fuel Requirements & Tuning Maps

Premium 91-octane fuel or better is recommended for supported JB4 performance maps, with certain configurations requiring higher octane or specific fuel blends.

Available map functions and boost targets vary by engine, firmware version, vehicle modifications, and fuel quality. Always follow the correct Burger Motorsports tuning guidance for your specific BMW application.

Do not select ethanol or higher-boost maps without confirming fuel-system suitability and the required supporting modifications.

Does the JB4 require an ECU unlock?

No ECU unlock or conventional ECU flash is required for the supported plug-and-play JB4 configurations.

Is the JB4PRO wireless adapter included?

Yes. The current B38/B46/B48 JB4 package includes the JB4PRO wireless connection hardware and free compatible app.

Will the JB4 work with my BMW's factory ECU software?

The JB4 does not overwrite the original ECU calibration. Compatibility with your specific vehicle, ECU generation, and software should still be verified.

Can I remove the JB4 later?

Yes. The hardware can be removed and returned to a factory-style wiring configuration when installed and removed correctly.

Is the JB4 compatible with California emissions requirements?

Burger Motorsports offers a specific CARB-approved Gen1 configuration for designated applications. Verify the applicable Executive Order and exact vehicle eligibility before ordering. Approval does not extend automatically to every BMW listed on this page.
