What Is a FEMTO ECU Unlock?

Starting with the 2020+ lineup, BMW introduced advanced encryption to their engine computers (DME/ECU). This means no OBD tuning is possible until the DME is professionally unlocked using proprietary FEMTO tools. This unlock is a one-time process that allows tuning software like Bootmod3, MG Flasher, or MHD to communicate with your ECU.

Do Some BMWs Have Two ECUs?

Yes. Certain models, such as the BMW M8, 850i, XM and G90 M5, feature a dual DME setup. In these cases, both ECUs must be removed and sent in for the unlock. Sending only one will cause start-up issues and tuning incompatibility. We provide full instructions for identifying and removing both units safely.
