The BMW FEMTO Unlock Process

What Is a FEMTO Unlock?

FEMTO is the trusted company we use to perform ECU unlocks on locked BMW DMEs.

All BMW ECUs produced after 06/2020 require a professional unlock before the tuning process can begin.

FEMTO now has a United States based location located just 30 minutes from M-Tech Performance, making the process fast and convenient for our customers.

Once an S58 or B58 ECU is unlocked, it can then be licensed with the customer’s preferred tuning platform including:

• Bootmod3
• EcuTek
• MHD
• Custom bench flash tuning

It is important to understand that the FEMTO unlock itself does NOT tune the vehicle. The unlock simply allows the ECU to accept tuning and calibration changes afterward.

Important Warranty Information

It is important to understand that the FEMTO unlock process will void the vehicle’s factory BMW warranty on the DME/ECU and may impact additional powertrain warranty coverage depending on the dealership and vehicle situation.

By proceeding with the FEMTO unlock process, the customer acknowledges and accepts all responsibility regarding potential warranty implications associated with modifying and unlocking the factory ECU.

Which BMW Engines Require FEMTO Unlocking?

All BMW ECUs produced after 06/2020 require FEMTO unlocking before tuning can begin.

Common BMW engines requiring FEMTO unlock include:

• S58
• B58 Gen 2
• S63tu4
• S68

What Is Different About the S68 Platform?

The S68 platform currently has additional tuning restrictions compared to the S58 and B58 platforms.

Vehicles equipped with the S68 engine currently require a FEMTO flash solution and can only be tuned by select approved tuners.

Common S68 equipped BMW models include:

• BMW G99 M5 Touring
• BMW F95 X5M

How to Get Started

2. Remove your ECU(s) and confirm if your vehicle has one or two ECU's.
3. Ship the ECU(s) to our Fort Lauderdale facility .
4. We handle the FEMTO unlock delivery to the FEMTO Miami location and return it to you fully ready to tune.
5. Start tuning with Bootmod3, MHD, or your platform of choice.
